Skype is a commercial VoIP system, but the clients are free and are available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Linux-specific issues
- Problem with sound device with skype 1.2.0.11, occurs each time after a call is finished. Need to restart skype to make the next call. This is a known issue specific to this version of skype. Also occurs when other applications are currently using the sound system.
- Alsa recording and playback can be tested with arecord and aplay..
$ arecord Test.wav $ aplay Test.wav
- Proper mixer setup Especially annoying is the echo effect which sometimes occurs. Then, everything spoken into the microphone is heard in the speaker. One reason is a misconfigured mixer: make sure to deselect the microphone for output, in kmix this means the green led near the Mic control on the Input tab must be off.
